Transport Manager CPC or Driver CPC: choose the right training

The names sound similar, but the training serves different roles. Start with the job you need to do.

Illustrative transport management learning scene

“I need my CPC” can mean two different things in transport. Before booking, explain the role you will perform: driving professionally, managing an operator's transport activities, or doing both. Similar names do not make the qualifications interchangeable.

Start with the responsibility

The Transport Manager CPC concerns professional competence for managing transport operations. GOV.UK explains that standard national and international operator licence holders need a transport manager. Passing the qualification is one part of the route: an operator must also apply to have the person added to its licence, with approval required before they start in that role. See the official transport manager overview.

Driver CPC concerns professional lorry, bus and coach driving. Its requirements depend on the driving you do and whether an exemption applies. A manager qualification does not replace a driver's obligations, and attending Driver CPC periodic training does not award a Transport Manager CPC. Check the official Driver CPC training guidance for the driving side.

You do not have to start as a driver

A transport office background can be useful, but do not rule yourself out because you have never driven an HGV. GOV.UK says you do not need a driving licence to qualify as a transport manager. Equally, driving experience does not remove the need to learn the wider business, financial and management subjects covered by the qualification.

Choose the correct transport sector

Road haulage and road passenger transport have different Transport Manager CPC examinations. The courses on this site focus on road haulage. If you plan to manage bus or coach operations, ask for the passenger transport route before booking. GOV.UK's qualification guidance explains the distinction.

Common reasons to ask before booking

A director may be looking for operator licence awareness training rather than an initial professional qualification. An existing qualified transport manager may need refresher training. A working driver may need periodic Driver CPC. These are different starting points, so a short conversation can prevent spending money on the wrong course.

Make your enquiry specific

Tell the provider what you currently do, the vehicles involved, any qualifications you already hold and what you need the training to achieve. If an employer has requested training, get the course name in writing. If you are working towards a licence application, explain that timetable as well.
