What Happens After You Pass the TM CPC?

Passing is a major milestone, but becoming a nominated Transport Manager involves additional steps and ongoing responsibility.

What Happens After You Pass the TM CPC?

TM CPC practical guide: This article is written to help candidates understand the subject in plain English and connect exam knowledge with the real responsibilities of a Transport Manager.

Your certificate does not automatically put you on a licence

An operator must apply to nominate you on its operator licence and the nomination must be accepted by the Traffic Commissioner before you start acting as that operator’s Transport Manager.

Internal or external Transport Manager

You may work as an internal Transport Manager with a genuine link to one operator, or as an external Transport Manager under contract. External Transport Managers are subject to limits and must still have enough time and independence to manage each operation effectively.

The role carries real responsibility

Transport Managers are expected to exercise continuous and effective management. That includes systems for drivers, vehicles, maintenance, drivers’ hours, training and compliance, not simply periodic paperwork checks.

Keep your knowledge current

Regulatory expectations and operational rules evolve. Continue professional development, follow Traffic Commissioner and DVSA guidance and retain evidence of refresher activity.
