What Is a Transport Manager CPC?

A practical introduction to the professional qualification, who needs it and what it prepares you to do.

What Is a Transport Manager CPC?

TM CPC practical guide: This article is written to help candidates understand the subject in plain English and connect exam knowledge with the real responsibilities of a Transport Manager.

What the qualification is

The Transport Manager Certificate of Professional Competence (TM CPC) is the professional qualification used to demonstrate the knowledge needed to manage road haulage or passenger transport operations. For road haulage, the syllabus covers the legal, commercial, financial, safety and operational knowledge needed to manage a transport undertaking.

Who normally needs it

Standard national and standard international goods vehicle operator licences require professional competence to be satisfied through a nominated transport manager. A restricted licence does not normally require a nominated transport manager, although the operator still remains responsible for compliant operation.

What you study

Typical subject areas include operator licensing, drivers’ hours, tachographs, vehicle maintenance, road safety, employment and commercial law, financial management, international operations and the practical management of a compliant transport operation.

How the assessment works

The current qualification route requires candidates to pass both a multiple-choice assessment and a case-study assessment. Training is not legally mandatory before sitting the approved examination, but a structured course can make the breadth of the syllabus and the application of knowledge much easier to manage.

What happens after you pass

Passing the CPC gives you the professional qualification, but it does not automatically add you to an operator licence. An operator must apply to nominate you and the Traffic Commissioner considers matters including professional competence, good repute, available time and whether you can exercise continuous and effective management.
